October 2021 saw the tenth annual William Alwyn Music Festival on the Suffolk coast. James Gilchrist and I gave a song recital in Blythburgh Church of British song by women composers – Rebecca Clarke, Elizabeth Maconchy, Madeleine Dring, and Doreen Carwithen – all of whom are represented on the three volumes of ‘100 Years of British Song’. Carwithen lived with William Alwyn in Blythburgh from the late 1960s onwards, and her centenary is being celebrated this year with a festival of her music in her birthplace of Haddenham, Buckinghamshire.
